Bob Barr Cements Texas

By being the only presidential candidate on the ballot. Apparently everyone else forgot to file in time…

From Ballot Access News:

Section 192.031 of the Texas election code says that political parties must certify their presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the November ballot no later than 70 days before the general election. It says, “A political party is entitled to have the names of its nominees for president and vice-president placed on the ballot if before 5 p.m. of the 70th day before presidential election day, the party’s state chair signs and delivers to the secretary of state a written certification of the name’s of the party’s nominees for president and vice-president.”

This year, that deadline is August 26. UPDATE: At 2:30 pm Texas time, August 27, Kim Kizer of the Texas Secretary of State’s elections division says neither major party’s certification has been received in the Elections Division. The Executive Office of the Secretary of State refers all questions back to the Elections Division.

This year, neither the Democratic Party nor the Republican Party obeyed this law. See this link to the Secretary of State’s web page showing a blank for the Republicans and Democrats for president.

Well that kind of puts McCain in a bit of a bind now doesn’t? In all seriousness I’m sure some sort of workaround will be found. But on a purely hypothetical level this oversight is highly amusing to consider for a spell.

Wanna Make A Movie?

while hand-wringing from the chattering classes about what to do with “da kids” dominates the media, charities such as arrive connected, who offer confidential advice to young people, are engaged doing something about it. ever keen to embark on london’s stripling in constructive projects that actually trouble to them, they’ve launched a short screen game.

Nobody’s Perfect calls for 16-25 year olds interested in directing, producing, starring in or scoring films to submit examples of their work - no matter how rough and ready. The work will be judged by a stellar crowd of experts, including Sandi Thom, Harry Potter alumnus Jason Isaacs, and Georgia Groom, currently appearing at a Cineworld near you in Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging.

The group will mull over all the entrants, and a number of talented individuals will be invited to collaborate on the final six films. The crews will be mentored by industry professionals and make the shorts on weekend courses in and around Islington, and the finished products will be premiered at a swish, star-studded event at the Covent Garden Odeon on October 21st.

To be in with a chance of getting on that red carpet, though, you’ve got to submit your film, music, performance or script by September 5th. Doesn’t matter how rough it looks or sounds, just get it in there - the judges are looking for raw talent, not a polished product. Need some inspiration? Check out some tips from shining lights like Tarantino and, er, Shaggy. Once you’ve perfected your entry, visit the How-To page and for details on submitting your work, and who knows - you could be the next Noel Clarke.

what goes almost, comes around for donald duck in these crop disney cartoons spanning the years 1947-1950. donald, the supporting player whose fowl demeanour stole scenes from mickey mouse, now finds himself upstaged by a menagerie of mischievous characters directed to send him into attribute fits. the nuttiest, of course, are chisel and dale, who made their debut in a pluto cartoon, but were ideally teamed with donald in the cartoon that gave the rodent duo their names, and which is included in this gathering. another highlight of this set is the oscar-nominated christmas cartoon “toy tinkers,” in which c&d maraud donald’s home and use an arsenal of toys to try and hoist his cache of nuts. “clown of the jungle” hilariously pairs donald with the rambunctiously idiot aracuan bird (first seen in the column, the three caballeros), who foils bird photographer donald’s every kodak moment. donald’s nephews, huey, dewey, and louie, are featured in three lively cartoons. another comic foil in return donald is a bee that supplies the buzz in three cartoons. lesser known (and since good reason) is the bootle beetle, who appears in several cartoons to relate stories of his misadventures with donald.

Not that Donald can’t carry a cartoon solo. Three cartoons in this set rank among his best. In “Donald’s Dilemma,” a conk on the head from a flower pot transforms Donald into a Sinatra-like crooner, much to the growing displeasure of Daisy, who does not want to share him with his adoring fans. In “Donald’s Dream Voice,” after his voice alienates customers, salesman Donald takes a voice pill (”I’ll try anything once”) that gives him the debonair tones of Ronald Colman (it’s still funny even if you don’t know who he is). And in “Dip Drippy Donald,” a sleepy Donald tries to cope with a leaky faucet. As with past Walt Disney Treasures sets, a “From the Vault” feature separates cartoons with mildly politically incorrect content, ranging from Huey, Dewey, and Louie smoking in “Donald’s Happy Birthday” to a Chinese caricature in “Three for Breakfast.” On-camera host Leonard Maltin supplies the viewer advisory. Like Daffy Duck over at Warner Bros., Donald is hardly a role model, which gives these riotous cartoons some un-Disney-like edge. But they do stand the test of time, and are a feather in Donald’s cap. was the 2008 show just past publisher idw’s last comic-con international? president ted adams is tendency that way, and although he’s continuing to pick up from the other side of the tiff in case he changes his mind, he’s convinced to the point where he’s comfortable saying about idw’s hometown show and north american comics’ biggest showcase: “i think we’re likely not to be at san diego next year.” adams allowed us access to some of his comic-con time to talk about the decision. this interview took place friday morning of the disclose in idw’s reserved congress reside on the convention center’s second level, not far from 20 feet away from their fare of sodas and bagels, as other idw staffers and i imagine creative personnel milled about. i mention all that to underline this isn’t a company with a minor presence innocently deciding whether or not they’ll go next year, but a sizable society fully invested in the show thinking about a alteration in strategy. adams says a pre-eminent judgement he decided to talk to cr was to further conversation and solicit opinions from the comics industry in general. i’m going to connection some folks immediately but if anyone out there reading would like to venture an opinion on the following discussion, or idw’s decree whether or not to exemplify or, as a matter of fact, anything discussed here,
